1so...that「とても〜なので」（結果・程度）

so...thatの本質
so + 形容詞/副詞 + that節で「とても〜なので…」という結果を表す。「so（それほど）」が程度を示し、「that」が結果を導く。
so...thatの文法構造
  • so + 形容詞 + that節：The movie was so boring that I fell asleep.
  • so + 副詞 + that節：He ran so fast that nobody could catch him.
  • so many/much/few/little + 名詞 + that節：特殊な形
so...thatの例文
The coffee was so hot that I couldn't drink it.
コーヒーはとても熱くて飲めなかった。
She speaks so quickly that I can't understand her.
彼女はとても早く話すので理解できない。

ネイティブ感覚：soの「指示」機能
ネイティブにとって「so」は「それほど」という指示語。話し手が程度の高さを示し、聞き手に「どれくらい？」という疑問を抱かせ、「that」以下でその答えを提示する自然な流れ。

2such...that「とても〜なので」（結果・程度）

such...thatの本質
such + (形容詞+)名詞 + that節で「とても〜なので…」という結果を表す。「such」は名詞を修飾する際に使用。
soとsuchの使い分け
❌ He is so a nice person that everyone likes him.
⭕ He is such a nice person that everyone likes him.
⭕ He is so nice that everyone likes him.
名詞（person）がある場合は「such」、形容詞（nice）のみなら「so」を使う。
such...thatの例文
It was such a difficult exam that many students failed.
とても難しい試験だったので多くの学生が落第した。
She has such beautiful eyes that everyone stares at her.
彼女はとても美しい目をしているのでみんなが見つめる。
They made such a noise that the neighbors complained.
とてもうるさくしたので近所の人が苦情を言った。

3so that「〜するために」（目的）

so that（目的）の本質
so that + 主語 + can/could/may/might/will/would + 動詞で「〜するために」という目的を表す。助動詞とセットで使用されることが特徴。
so that（目的）の文法構造
  • 現在の目的：so that + can/may/will
  • 過去の目的：so that + could/might/would
  • 助動詞の省略：くだけた文では助動詞が省略される場合もある
so that（目的）の例文
I left early so that I could catch the first train.
始発に乗るために早く出発した。
Please speak loudly so that everyone can hear you.
みんなに聞こえるように大きな声で話してください。
She saved money so that she could buy a new car.
新しい車を買うためにお金を貯めた。

4in order that「〜するために」（目的）

in order thatの本質
in order that + 主語 + 助動詞 + 動詞で「〜するために」という目的を表す。so thatより格式が高く、書き言葉でよく使われる。
入試での出題傾向
in order thatは比較的格式が高い表現なので、長文読解やフォーマルな文章で出題される。so thatとの書き換え問題でも頻出。

The teacher repeated the explanation in order that all students might understand.
すべての生徒が理解するように先生は説明を繰り返した。
We left the windows open in order that fresh air could come in.
新鮮な空気が入るように窓を開けたままにした。
The company invested heavily in order that it could expand overseas.

5結果と目的の見分け方

ネイティブ感覚：結果と目的の違い
結果（so...that）は「その結果として起こったこと」、目的（so that）は「そうなるように意図したこと」。ネイティブは文脈と助動詞の有無で自然に判断している。
