1譲歩の基本概念

譲歩の本質
譲歩とは「一歩引いて認める」という意味。「〜だけれども、〜にもかかわらず」という逆接の関係を表す。主節の内容が、従属節の内容に反してでも成り立つことを示す。
ネイティブの感覚
ネイティブにとって譲歩は「予想に反する展開」のイメージ。「普通なら〜のはずなのに、実際は違う」という驚きや意外性を含む表現として感じられる。
基本例文
Although it was raining, we went for a walk.
雨が降っていたけれども、私たちは散歩に出かけた。
I like the restaurant we went to last night, although it was a little too expensive.
昨夜行ったレストランは気に入ったが、少し高すぎた。
Though tired, she continued working.
疲れていたけれども、彼女は働き続けた。

3even ifの特殊用法

even ifとeven thoughの違い
  • even if：仮定的な状況「たとえ〜だとしても」
  • even though：事実に基づく「〜にもかかわらず」
ネイティブの感覚
even ifは「もし最悪の場合でも」というニュアンス。ネイティブは仮想的な極端な状況を設定して、それでも主節が成り立つことを強調する感覚で使う。
even ifの例文
Even if it rains tomorrow, we'll have the picnic.
たとえ明日雨が降っても、ピクニックを行います。
I wouldn't change my mind even if you paid me.
たとえお金をもらっても、考えを変えるつもりはない。
Even if I were a millionaire, I would live simply.
たとえ億万長者だったとしても、質素に生活するだろう。

4whether...or notの表現

whether...or notの構造
  • whether A or not：「Aであろうとなかろうと」
  • whether A or B：「AであってもBであっても」
  • whether...or not：条件に関係なく行動することを表す
入試のコツ
whether...or notは譲歩の意味で使われる場合、「どちらの場合でも」という選択の余地がない強い意志を表す。文脈から判断しよう。
whether...or notの例文
Whether it rains or not, the event will be held outdoors.
雨が降ろうと降るまいと、イベントは屋外で開催される。
I'll go whether you come or not.
あなたが来ようと来まいと、私は行きます。
Whether rich or poor, everyone deserves respect.
金持ちであろうと貧乏であろうと、誰もが尊敬される権利がある。

as if/as thoughの注意点
as ifとas thoughの後は、現実と異なる内容の場合は仮定法、現実的な内容の場合は直説法を使う。
