1another とthe otherの基本的な区別

本質を理解しよう
anotherは「もう一つの」（3つ以上の中から任意の別のもの）、the otherは「残りのもう一方」（2つのうちの残りの1つ、または全体から特定部分を除いた残り全体）という感覚の違いがある。
ネイティブの感覚
anotherは「an + other」が語源で、「一つの別のもの」というイメージ。選択肢が多数ある中から「別の何か」を指す。the otherの「the」は特定を表し、「その残りのもの」と明確に決まっているものを指す。
基本例文
I don't like this book. Could you show me another one?

3otherの形容詞的用法

形容詞としての用法
otherは形容詞として名詞を修飾することができる。この場合、複数形は「other + 複数名詞」となり、「others」とは異なる。
・other people（他の人々）
・other books（他の本）
・the other students（残りの生徒たち）
入試のコツ
選択肢に「other」「others」「the other」「the others」が並んでいる場合は、まず単数か複数か、そして特定の範囲があるかどうかを判断する。「the」があるかないかが重要な決め手となる。

4ネイティブの感覚で理解する

イメージで理解
ネイティブは「another」を使うとき、頭の中に「たくさんの選択肢」をイメージしている。「the other」を使うときは、「2つのグループ」や「限定された範囲での残り」をイメージしている。「others」は「世の中の他の人々」、「the others」は「このグループの残りの人々」という具体性の違いがある。

※2つしかない場合は「the other」を使う。
